Coupling a global glacier model to a global hydrological model prevents underestimation of glacier runoff

چکیده

Abstract. Global hydrological models have become a valuable tool for range of global impact studies related to water resources. However, glacier parameterization is often simplistic or non-existent in models. By contrast, do represent complex dynamics and evolution, as such, they hold the promise better resolving runoff estimates. In this study, we test hypothesis that coupling model with leads more realistic representation and, consequently, improved predictions model. To end, Glacier Evolution Model (GloGEM) coupled PCRaster GLOBal Water Balance model, version 2.0 (PCR-GLOBWB 2), using eWaterCycle platform. For period 2001–2012, evaluated against uncoupled PCR-GLOBWB 2 25 large-scale (>50 000 km2), glacierized basins. The produces higher estimates across all basins throughout melt season. summer, differences from 0.07 % weakly glacier-influenced 252 strongly difference can primarily be explained by not accounting flow mass loss, thereby causing an underestimation runoff. performs reproducing basin observations mostly basins, which where has most impact. This study underlines importance demonstrates potential

Inversion of a glacier hydrology model

The subglacial hydrologic system exerts strong controls on the dynamics of the overlying ice, yet the parameters that govern the evolution of this system are not widely known or observable. To gain a better understanding of these parameters,we invert a spatially averagedmodel of subglacial hydrology from observations of ice surface velocity and outlet stream discharge at Kennicott Glacier, Wran...

A new model for global glacier change and sea-level rise

The anticipated retreat of glaciers around the globe will pose far-reaching challenges to the management of fresh water resources and significantly contribute to sea-level rise within the coming decades. Here, we present a new model for calculating the twenty-first century mass changes of all glaciers on Earth outside the ice sheets. The Global Glacier Evolution Model (GloGEM) includes mass los...

Effect of dust event timing on glacier runoff : sensitivity analysis for a Tibetan glacier

The impact of the timing of dust deposition on glacier runoff was evaluated using a glacier mass–balance model with a newly improved scheme to track a dusted layer in a snow layer of a glacier. The lowering of surface albedo due to the dusted layer appearing leads to a drastic increase of glacier runoff even under the same meteorological conditions. Calculations of seasonal sensitivity, the rel...

investigating the feasibility of a proposed model for geometric design of deployable arch structures

deployable scissor type structures are composed of the so-called scissor-like elements (sles), which are connected to each other at an intermediate point through a pivotal connection and allow them to be folded into a compact bundle for storage or transport. several sles are connected to each other in order to form units with regular polygonal plan views. the sides and radii of the polygons are...
